Week 28 & 29

These two weeks have been a bit hectic because of STAAR testing during week 28, which closed the library for two days, and I was out during week 29 on Thursday and Friday to attend the Abydos Learning and Literacy Conference for teachers and trainers in Houston. During these two weeks, I repeated the lessons that I did in week 26 for Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grades in order to meet our goal of reading all 20 Mockingbird books by the beginning of May. Where's the Red Chair now?

As the librarian at Shaw Elementary for four years, I joyously read books to kids while perched in my red chair, a family heirloom built by my grandfather. I started this blog as a way to share lessons and read-alouds and document a "year in the life" of a busy elementary librarian. Now that I've moved on to high school, the red chair resides in my home, but it's still the place that I perch to read, write, and contemplate the world around me.

As a librarian at Mesquite High School, my mission is to turn teens into life-long readers--to ignite that spark for literacy that will propel them into their adult lives. Even though the red chair no longer has a physical presence in my library, it serves as a symbol of my mission--that reading will become so important to these teens that they will seek out a physical space for it--that they might have their own "red reading chair" one day.

A librarian can dream... right?
